News for Friday December 11

Time is flying by, and we are down to our last week of the 2009 school year!  We plan to do many fun holiday activities next week.

Information is coming home tonight about the Fluoride varnish. The students might have a yellowish tint to their teeth. It’s best if the students do not eat anything hot or crunchy and not to brush their teeth until tomorrow morning.

We will be having spelling test next Friday, our last one for 2009! We will also have reading homework that will be due next Friday. December Book-it coupons will be sent home next week too for any student who has completed all December reading homework on time.

We will have a unit 4 math test on Thursday. A study guide will be sent home Tuesday. We are studying perimeter, triangles and U.S. and metric measurements. This unit has been cut in half and the remainder of the unit will be taught after MAP, to help prepare students for fourth grade.   In science we’ve started a unit on matter and energy.  Thank you to everyone who donated items for the puppy chow experiment! The kids enjoy every bite! Many asked for the recipe, it’s very simple to make and does make a large batch!

Puppy Chow
Ingredients:
1/2 cup Peanut Butter
1/4 cup Butter
1 cup Chocolate Chips
1/2 tsp. Vanilla
9 cups Chex cereal (any flavor)
1-1/2 cups Powdered Sugar

Instructions:
1. Combine peanut butter, butter and chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl.
2. Microwave for one minute then stir to blend all ingredients thoroughly. Add 1/2 tsp. vanilla. Stir well.
3. Place the 9 cups of Crispix cereal in a very large bowl.
4. Pour the peanut butter-chocolate mixture over the cereal and toss evenly, making sure all the cereal gets a good covering.
5. Coat with powdered sugar, sprinkling evenly over the cereal and tossing as you sprinkle to cover each piece well.

Check out our school blog for weekly updates.  I have a link on the right to the Willard East site.  Principal Miller has posted a link to our December Online Scavenger Hunt!  This scavenger hunt will allow you to read about Willard East teachers and their holiday traditions.  You will learn a lot about the teachers at East!  Every student who participates will be entered in a drawing to win a $10 gift card to Barnes and Noble.  As an extra bonus, the class with the most students who enter will get to spend a “fun hour” with Principal Miller!

Just a reminder about next week’s activities: Thursday is winter craft day from 1:15-3:15.  Parents are welcome and invited to attend.  This will be in place of a “typical” winter party.  Please send in $2.00 for the crafts if you haven’t already.  Friday is our school wide pajama day.  Students may wear P.J.’s and slippers and bring a stuffed animal or blanket.  If your child wears slippers, please make sure they also have shoes to wear outside our classroom.

This week we also created a Wallwisher. This is a neat website which allows the students to add a small note of information. We created one about the matter and energy and the information we have learned so far. You’ll have to check it out! http://www.wallwisher.com/wall/aschlager-matter

Weekly News for December 4

It’s hard to believe second quarter is almost over! It seems like the school year just started. We are finishing unit 3 in math and a study guide will be coming home Friday. The test will be Monday.  We will also be starting unit 4 about perimeter and shapes next week and will be finished and able to test on Thursday December 17.

Please send in $2 for craft money if you haven’t done so already. If you would like to attend our third grade craft activities, please plan to attend Thursday December 17. The activities will be from 1:15-3:15. The third grade students will make four different winter crafts in each of the four third grade classes; spending thirty minutes in each room. $2.00 covers the cost of the four crafts, making each one about $0 .50 a piece. These are crafts they are able to give as gifts or just to keep.

In third grade, we don’t necessarily have a Christmas party, instead we have an all-day reading party on Friday, December 18. It’s a school wide pajama day as well! Principal Miller will be reading a Christmas story to our class, we will be watching a movie and also be applying the reading strategies we have learned this semester as we read the throughout the day. If you would like to attend the craft activities on the 17th, this will be more of a typical Christmas party type of setting without the food. :)

Reading homework will still be sent home for the next two weeks in December. Remember if your child returns each month’s weekly homework on time, they will receive a free personal pan pizza coupon for Pizza Hut with our Book-it reading program!

We have started a new science unit on matter and energy. We will continue this unit throughout January. We would like to perform a few experiments in class with this unit. If you are able to donate any of the following items, they would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance.

  • Creamy Peanut Butter (unopened container)
  • Package of chocolate chips (unopened package)
  • Plain Chex cereal (unopened box)
  • Powdered sugar (unopened package)
  • Also, Grade cards will be sent home the first week back in January. Grade cards cannot be sent home if you have any lunch debts.
